Abdul Waheed Khan
The man
who knew how to master this position,Abdul Waheed khan was even tempered
opportunist, the first of pakistan's great spearheads. Efficent and cool,Waheed
surely was a star in pakistan's hockey firmament and an integral part of
the side responsible for the green shirts anitial ascendancy at the world
level. He was a sort a sort of trendsetter in that he was the first center
-for-ward to fall back to help the defence, something unheard of inthose
days .And a tribute to his dfficiency was the fact that it did not cause
the attack to suffer. Slight of body,Waheed in his heyday must have been
quite deceptive for he had great stamina. His
upper body may have been slim, but the secret of his strength were wonderful
legs and wellmuscled thighs. He
used to play bent on his stick with the ball in front,in classic style.
And he could give and recieve the ball with great facility and then quickly
get into a position in the circle to exploit the manoeuvre. Those
who have played along with him say that hewas very easy togo along with. |

Those who have played with him say that he was very easy to combine with . Waheed, with
his wonderful distribution all around, beautiful positioning and good scoring
was a complete center-forward. He was the highest scorerat the '62 Asiad
with 16 goals; that may have been his highest tally in one event but he
was a heavy scorer in the most championship in the which he took part. He
came back to lend his services to the game as manager, and justly had his
share of the glory when the'78 squad regained the World Cup gold in Buenos
Aires. The same side under him later went on to win the inaugural Champions
Trophy and the '78Bangkok Asiad. |
