Saeed Anwar
At his prime, Saeed Anwar was a classic right-half who
as a person had the manners and style more suited to a mafia don. Highly
competent, he had marvellous speed, great control and good initiative
in attack.
In defence, he was a different kind of a half-back as he did not believe
in blocking the winger or marking him. His anticipation was so good that
he tool care of the winger without really devoting all his energies to
it. Instead, in the meanswhile he would go up front, creating space to
move with the inside-forward.
In essence, he was an attacking player who had such tremendous reserves
of stamina that he could fall back and cover up for the defence, failing
back at full speed.
Incidentally, as a half-back he was seldom beaten and the only people
who could in fact get past him were allow pakistanis, like Shahnaz Sheikh,
in domestic hockey.
