Salim
Sherwani
One of the outstanding goalkeepers of his era, Salim
Sherwani in the twilight of his career captained Pakistan to a wonderful
triumph in the 79's Essanda World Tournament at Perth.
It was befitting that Sherwani's career ended on a victorious note as
in a long and fruitful career, which spanned nearly a decade, through
the 70's he had served the team admirably well under the bar. His reputation
was tarnished a bit as Paul Litjens came on the scene as a great striker
of the penalty, but it was sustained and survived the test of time.
Despite Litjens exposing his limitations on a few occasions, Sherwani
guarded Pakistan's goal with great distinction. Sherwani was lucky that
his time with the Pakistan team coincided with the two great full-backs,
Manzoor Senior and Munawaruz Zaman working in tandem to protect the Pakistan
goal.

Perhaps hsi vulnerability to the short corners striked
can attributed to his being a tall player, for whome bending down in a
jiffy was a bit difficult and sliding down was not in vogue those days.
But even if he had not been tall, and even if he had gone down as Mion
did, stopping the likes of Litjens all the time would have been well nigh
impossible.
